We all have masculine energy (yang) and feminine energy (yin) within us. Yang energy is associated with solar energy and ‘doing’, whereas yin energy is associated with lunar energy and ‘being’. We live in a world which requires us to be in our yang (masculine) energy a lot, stuck in cycles of doing, striving and achieving, which can lead to stress and anxiety.

Yin yoga is a slower, introspective practice which invites us to turn inwards and deepen our awareness to our subtle bodies. In stillness, we are able to surrender control and meet our bodies with compassion. The practice creates space for feelings and sensations to rise up to be felt and observed without judgement, inviting cathartic release.

What are the benefits of Yin Yoga?

Yin yoga accesses deeper layers of the body like the connective tissue and fascia, with poses being held for longer periods of time. By letting gravity do its work, we can maintain flexibility in our joints as we let go, release tension, soften and relax. This also creates space for prana or chi (life-force energy) to flow through us and release energetic blockages which could be at the root of physical illness. â€‹â€‹

Yin Yoga focuses on the function of a pose - and how it targets an area in the body, rather than the aesthetic of a pose and how it looks. Here we can see how unique our bodies are; a pose might work for you but not for someone else and that’s ok. With Yin yoga, the aim is to find your unique edge.

This is where the magic happens. â€‹

Nadia, Bali

Harriet is a wonderful teacher and I thoroughly enjoyed being in her yin yoga class. I felt safe, held and guided in all the right ways. The cozy, candlelit space she curated was a cherry on top.
